delle arti (about those arts)

Eravamo al mare.

We were on the seaside somewhere in the South East, me and my Samurai Master.

I asked my Master why he couldn't teach me all the tricks and the moves and everything. I had the impression that he was keeping some sort of secret for himself.

He told me that one day I would have understood.

Some times later, I asked him again. I wanted to know why, I wanted to know more.

Then he told me that one they, when I'd been a Master, I would have understood.

Because I insisted, he shared with me a story.

Somewhere in Japan, there was a cat and a tiger which became friends. Every day, they went hunting together. The cat caught his prey with much ease compared to the tiger. The tiger couldnt figure out why. He was much bigger, heavier and stronger, yet he lacked the superior hunting skills of the cat. The tiger aspired to be a great hunter just like the cat, so he asked him if he would teach him how to be a great hunter as well.

The cat, being a good friend, agreed. He taught the tiger how to hunt as he did but while the cat was teaching the tiger how to be an efficient hunter, he purposely left out one secret.

Some time later, the two friends found themselves in trouble. For many days they went by the jungle without eating or drinking. One day, while hunting, the tiger was so hungry that he asked the cat to take the lead. The tiger did this for a reason. As they made their usual round in the jungle, the tiger told the cat that he was going to kill him and eat him so that he would not die of starvation.

The tiger assumed that because he was bigger than the cat he would have won the fight. The tiger began to chase his own friend. But the cat knew the tiger enough.

As soon as the tiger got close to him with his claws, the cat did a back flip and ended up behind the tiger. By the time the tiger realised this and turned to chase him again, the cat had run up on a tree. The cat was able to prevent the tiger from killing him thanks to what he kept secret. The cats never taught the tiger the most vital of his hunting and escaping techniques.

When the tiger wanted to kill the cat, his discreet wisdom saved him.

I thank my Samurai Master everyday for sharing his wisdom with me.
But I can't show his face in my blog. This shall remain a secret.
